On 6th- 8th May 2021, Brace-Up The Young, in collaboration with Eco-Diversified International, Girls4Leadership Initiative and Nobel House College converged 35 students from 3 schools in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for 11 hours 30 minutes for Eco-Leadership Workshop, equipping them with leadership skills, the SDGs, relevant content on climate action, and using Arts to translate their ideas into a mural painting.

The project was proudly supported by the Five Cowries Art Education Initiative.

The Eco Leadership Training spanned for two days; Thursday 6th May 2021 and Friday, 7th May 2021, from 9 am to 5 pm daily, hosted by Noble House College, Obasanjo Hilltop Estate, Abeokuta Ogun State, Nigeria. We had three Participating Schools;

1. Noble House College, Abeokuta
2. Africa Church Grammar School
3. Yetuns International College, Abeokuta.

 The Eco-leadership training kicked off on Thursday 6th May 2021 with three intensive, educative, and engaging sessions.

The team Building skill session involved more practical activities on how the students and teachers present at the training can become excellent team players, emphasising the importance of relying on cooperation to achieve common goals. The facilitator adopted the Ballon game to instil the importance of team spirit and good communication facilitated by Obasanjo Fajemirokun of Brace up the young. The 2nd session on the Sustainable Development Goals introduced the students to global development plans like the MDGs and the SDGs. The session concentrated more on the 17goals of the SDGs using practical activities on how the students can promote the 2030 global agenda for Sustainable Development. The facilitator admonished the students on adopting strategies to promoting any of the 17 goals of the SDGs in their immediate communities facilitated by Kehinde Kayode of the Girls 4 Leadership Initiative. And the 3rd session was tailored on introducing the student & teachers to Climate Change and how they can become an agent for Climate Action by promoting the Sustainable Development Goal 13. The 3 R´s of Climate Action – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle were the central area of discussion used by the facilitator to introduce the teachers and students on means to becoming Climate action champions. The session was followed by recycling practical activities, turning waste materials into household useful materials facilitated by Oluwatoyin Agaja of Eco Diversified International.

Day 2 of the Eco Leadership training started at 10 am; the session was facilitated by Tolulope Williams (Art Educator from Five Cowries Art Education) and Adewunmi Ibikunle (Art Educator from Five Cowries Art Education). Students were taught the importance of nature to the human continued existence and how our activities can affect nature. Students and teachers were taught how to express themselves using art to promote sustainable development goals, particularly goal 13 – Climate Action.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Ogun State, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, ably represented by Mrs Onayiga Adeshola, shared the Commissioner’s warm greetings with the Organisers of the Eco-Leadership training program, the participating schools, teachers, and students.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Ogun State, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu employed the student present to be an advocate for the promotion of climate actions and should take up the message to other students in their schools and even their parents at their return back home.

The two-day workshop ended with the 35 students putting their ideas on combatting climate change into painting and sharing it on a mural.
